Stroke is the nation's fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability. May is Stroke Awareness Month and doctors stress the importance of knowing the symptoms and taking fast action. According to Dr. Nirav Vora (NEAR-uv VOR-ah), a neurologist with SSM Neurosciences Institute at DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, the use of a drug called TPA can stop a stroke in its tracks if used quickly.
Symptoms include drooping of the face, slurred speech, weakness in the arms, dizziness, double vision, and difficulty talking. Fortunately, the risk of stroke can be reduced by not smoking, controlling high blood pressure, and having normal weight and exercising.
