Harrodsburg City Commission Meets in Emergency Session

Its getting to be time for people to hit the out of doors and that includes Lions Park. When the AC went out at the community center there, Harrodsburg city commissioners called an emergency meeting. Emergency because they had to meet over the Memorial Day weekend so they could get business done to get the unit replaced. So they met -- albeit not in their regular quarters -- voted, approved and bought a new unit at a cost of 29 thousand dollars and had it installed immediately. They also took time as a group to remember the reason for Memorial Day and give pause to those who have died for American freedom.

One of Triplets Dies a Week After Crash

One of triplet siblings died yesterday, after they, their mother and a younger sister were in a crash a week ago. Officials in Boyle County said seven year old McKenna Padgett died from her injuries when her mother's minivan crossed the center line of Lebanon Road and hit another vehicle. McKenna's brothers seven year olds Chase and Conner are still in the hospital, as is their mother sister. The driver of the other vehicle involved, 59 year old Phillip Belcher was not hurt, but told police that the driver, identified as 38 year old Stefanie Padgett of Junction City was possibly distracted by something in the back seat, and when she focused on the road again, over corrected, slamming into Belcher's vehicle.

Two Indicted , Accused of Being al Qaeda Members

Two men believed to be al-Qaeda terrorists were indicted in Kentucky. The indictment was unsealed yesterday against 30-year-old Waad Ramadan Alwan and 23-year-old Mohanad Shareef Hammadi who were living in Bowling Green. They're accused of conspiring to kill US citizens and using Improvised Explosive Devices to kill American troops in Iraq.

Fire Damages Garrard Co House

Fire damaged a Garrard County home early yesterday. Fire officials were called to the house on Fall Lick Road around 1 a.m. They said crews got the fire out and nobody was hurt since nobody was at home. Firefighters don't yet know what caused the fire.

Six Fort Campbell Soldiers Killed in Attack in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense says six soldiers from Fort Campbell were killed in Afghanistan last week when an improvised explosive device hit their unit. The incident happened in Kandahar province. None of the soldiers was from Kentucky, but were assigned to Fox Company, (Pathfinder), 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Sisters Erect Headstone for Missing Brother

Its not clear if he's dead, but a long missing Casey County man has a grave at a local graveyard. Freda Elmore and Shirley Austin have been trying to find their missing brother 55 year old Randolph for a year and a half, but with no luck. Now, they've decided its time to bury him, even though there's no body to bury. They also paid tribute to his military service on Memorial Day since Randolph served in the army from 1972 to 1978. There is a ten thousand dollar reward in the case.

Man Hurt in Crash in Boyle Co Monday'

A man was seriously hurt in a motorcycle crash in Boyle County yesterday. Investigators said the man was driving along South Third when he hit some gravel and lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. They say he was flown to UK Hospital with life threatening injuries. Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the crash and they're not releasing the man's name.

Poineer Playhouse Gets NEA Grant

Pioneer Playhouse in Danville got a 15 thousand dollar grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant was one of eight given to organizations involved in the arts in Kentucky. The total grant for Kentucky was 228 thousand dollars, and the Kentucky Historical society in Frankfort got the biggest grant of 50 thousand dollars.

Kentucky Limestone Makes Kentucky Coal Cleaner

The Environmental Protection Agency said Kentucky Utilities needs to burn cleaner at its coal fired generating plants like E W Brown in Mercer County. So the bad news, as we told you last week, is that KU wants a more than 12 percent rate increase, saying the money to make cleaner energy. The good news is that it is using Kentucky limestone to do the cleaning. Those who work with the limestone say they never imagined that it would clean coal. Those who work with the coal say they never imagined limestone would make it a cleaner burning product.

Man Walkes Away from Blackburn

Police are on the lookout for a man who walked away from a prison. Officials discovered Brian Hendren missing from the Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington around 7:30 Sunday morning. Hendren is six feet three inches tall with green eyes and brown hair. He is serving a 16-year sentence for receiving stolen property.

Garrard Co Attorney Heading To Iraq

Whatever you're doing this Memorial Day weekend, remember what it is. One soldier will. Garrard County Attorney Mark Metcalf is heading to the Middle East, from Lancaster, Kentucky. He says he and others heading out will close Camp Victory and bringing soldiers home. Attorney Metcalf is Major Metcalf in the Kentucky National Guard. He'll go to Iraq in about two months, but before that will head to other places for training. Metcalf and his troops will be home in less than a year.

Harrodsburg Companies Get Grants and Will Hire 300

Three companies in Harrodsburg will be looking for employees. That's because the three, Corning, Hitachi Automotive Systems America and Wausau Paper are required to hire a total of 300 people since they're collectively getting half a million dollars in Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority grants. They're all three also getting other tax breaks.

Bowling Returns to Public Life...Temporarily

Some liked it, some didn't. Danville city commission voted last week to hire former mayor John Bowling as its interim city manger. JH Atkins and Kevin Caudill voted against the decision, but were defeated by three who voted for it. Bowling was a three term mayor for the city will start his new job on Wednesday and make six thousand dollars a month. Bowling decided five years ago not to run for mayor again, had served on the city commission and in the state legislature. Bowling said he came out of political retirement to take this job because he knew it would be temporary.

Car-School Bus Crash Friday and Only Minor Injuries

A school bus was involved in an accident in Lincoln County Friday morning. WLEX TV reports that dispatchers said a car and school bus collided at US-150 East and HWY-643 in Crab Orchard. EMS took one person to the hospital and a second victim was taken by car.

Casey Co Memorial Day Observed

Casey County observed Memorial Day on Saturday as people there remembered the reason for the day. Some came from Michigan and more from Indiana to Cold Springs Cemetery that day to pay tribute to soldiers who have died in combat. A World War II Veteran was awarded a Kentucky Colonel. Those in attendance at the ceremony said he was only a private when he left the service, but was promoted to colonel.

Dan Wheldon Wins Indy 500

For the second time, Dan Wheldon won the Indy 500 yesterday, the Centennial event at IMS. Weldon, who ran for several sponsors, also ran for the Alzheimer's Association. He became emotional when he talked after the race about his mother not being able to come to Indianapolis to see his win because she suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

More Info on Plane Crash

A Centre College grad was the pilot of a plane that crashed last week in North Carolina. Officials said 27 year old Matthew Shuey's passengers were heading back to Kentucky when the crash happened. It was en route from Georgia to Hazard when it crashed on Wednesday, about 120 miles from Asheville, North Carolina. Shuey and the women were all killed in the crash and Shuey's classmates said he was one of the most loved in the class. The women, all from Knott County, were identified as 23 year old Tiffany Maggard, 22 year old Kassie Robinson and 20 year old Kassie Robinson. Shuey was from Lexington, but lived in Nicholasville. The NTSB said Shuey radioed to say he had fire on board. Then, they told reporters, witnesses said they saw the plane level out, roll to the right, and head straight down. The plane went down in Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Mercer Co Deputies Investigate Theft

Mercer County sheriff's officials said that somebody allegedly stole about seven thousand dollars worth of electronics in a weekend burglary. Deputies were called to a house on Old Dixville Road just after midnight Sunday morning, and figured that the theft happened Saturday or early Sunday, There were large flatscreen TVs, a game console, DVD players, 50 dollars in change and prescription drugs stolen.

2nd Lawn Chair Film Fest a Hit

You knew this would happen: The Second Annual Danville Lawn Chair Film Festival was declared better than last year's first. Organizers said more than 250 people saw the 17 films from their lawn chairs on Friday. Festival Director Charlie Cox said he was thrilled with the number of people who turned out. There were comedies, drama, a horror flick, music videos, cell phone movies and even one made by a nine-year-old. There was lots to watch and lots to react to.

Laura Bush Coming to Richmond

Former First Lady Laura Bush will be in Richmond today. The former librarian is promoting her cause, literacy at an event called "A Day Among Friends" It will be at St. Mark Catholic Church. Church officials say security's been ramped up for the former First Lady. Students will join Mrs. Bush and then there's a fundraiser for the grown ups. Its a private Luncheon for about 400 contributors who have spent between 150 and 25 hundred dollars.

Train As A Volunteer Now Before The Next Disaster Strikes

When a disaster strikes, the first instinct of any human is to help. In the case of the Joplin tornado, Emergency Management officials had to request that people simply stay away while those trained in rescue could move in. Jessica Willingham, Chief Operating Communications Officer for the St. Louis American Red Cross says it pays to be ready in advance.






Officials have warned that this tornado season has only begun and the hurricane season is still to come. Both are expected to record breaking in the amount and strength of storms.

Financial Donations Requested For Tornado Victims

Officials are warning that the massive tornado outbreak in the south and the devastating destruction in Joplin, MO is only the beginning and more is to be expected. According to Jessica Willingham, Chief Communications Officer for the St. Louis American Red Cross, when their volunteers respond to any disaster, they must be able to have supplies in hand.






You can also text a ten dollar donation to 90999. Cell phone carriers are not charging extra fees for those texts so all of the money goes to the Red Cross.

Keep Kids Out of Hot Cars

Its getting hot, so lock your car when its parked. What do the two have in common? Safe Kids USA says locking a parked car will keep kids from climbing inside and possibly dying in the heat. The organization said last year was the worst its recorded for kids dying after being left in hot cars during the summer. While the parents of some who died said they simply forgot their child was in the car, Safe Kids recommends putting a purse or brief case in the car to give you a reason to open it. It also recommends setting an alarm on your cell phone to tell you to go back to your car when you're shopping to make sure your kids are okay.

Sunday Wind Peels Roof Off Storage Building

Sunday afternoon's rough weather ripped part of a roof off a Casey County house. The storm that traveled along Highway 70 peeled the roof off the old house. Sherman Hatter said the winds lasted for about 20 minutes and sounded like a train going through his property. Hatter said family members used to live in the house, but he now uses it for storage. He said he does have insurance on it, but probably just enough to fix the roof. Hatter's own house was not damaged and nobody was hurt.

Dr. Rachel Bishop, an ophthalmologist at the National Institutes of Health says whole body health can help with eye health.

Boyle Co Schools Cuts Budget

Lots of things are going lean in the current economy, and Boyle County Schools budget is another. Lean was the word that Superintendent Mike Lafavers used last week when the budget was finally passed. He said the board unanimously approved the preliminary budget, decreasing it by about half a million dollars for next fiscal year over this one. Over the past half a decade, about 50 staffers have left the schools and their positions have been done away with. Officials say that's one thing that's helped the budget get where it is now. Lafavers said the budget's been cut because of that since much of it goes toward salaries.

Meggitt Brings Second Plant To Danville

Its no longer "Project Trust". Its now, a second Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems plant in Danville. Governor Steve Beshear made the announcement last week, saying that somebody's doing something right when a company puts a second plant in your town. The expansion will bring 63 new jobs and a 7.3 million dollar investment into the city. The new plant will be at Weisiger Park, where the older plant, that does carbon processes is at John Hill Bailey Industrial Park that employs 70 people.

Man Sues Over Sons Suicide at Jail

Boyle County's being sued by a man who's son died as an inmate in the Boyle County Detention Center. The case that Robert Grubbs Jr. filed seeks an unspecified amount in sunitive damages and compensation because Grubbs said in the suit that jail officlas were negligent when they let Bobby Grubbs III hang himself on May 18 of last year. Grubbs III was 31 when he died more than a week later at the University of Louisville Medical Center and was in an isolation cell at the jail when he hanged himself.

UPDATE: Elder Found

Harrodsburg police officer Jason Elder has now been found an served with a summons to appear in court. He was indicted last week on 148 counts of having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl beginning in 2007 and running through November 2010. The Harrodsburg City Commission suspended him without pay this past Monday, pending the outcome of the case. State Police had said earlier in the day that they hadn't been able to track down Elder since the summons was issued. Elder is due to appear in court on June 21.

Boyle County Public Library Book Sale Takes Place This Weekend

The Friends of the Boyle County Public Library book sale is taking place today through Sunday. Jerry Taylor, spokesman for the Library says everyone can get great deals on books, cd books, audio books and donated books.






According to Taylor, later in the day on Sunday, the already discounted prices will be slashed again. Topics you can find vary from art books to biographies. The library is located at 307 W. Broadway in Danville.

Legal bills mounting

Legal bills continue to mount for Pulaski and McCreary counties. The expense comes from lengthy, failing battles to post the Ten Commandments in county courthouses. Federal Judge Jennifer Coffman awarded an additional 23 thousand dollars in attorney fees to the ACLU of Kentucky. That runs the total bill for the two counties past 456 thousand dollars. Attorneys for both sides plan to discuss ways to resolve the case.

Mina Gets Life Without Parole Plus 40 Years

Peggy Mina has been sentenced to life in prison after she admitted to killing 72-year-old Homer Carrender two years ago. The Pulaski County jury deliberated for about two and a half hours, then sentenced Mina. She won't have a chance for parole, and 20 years each for charges of burglary and robbery.

Stansbury Requests Hearing

Just as the commission predicted he would, now former Danville City Manager Paul Stansbury is calling for a public hearing on his termination. Ephraim Helton is Stansbury's attorney, and the mayor received a three page letter from Helton outlining Stansbury's defense against the claims the council has made against him that led to his dismissal. The hearing will fall some time between June 7 and June 17.

Cop Wanted on 148 Counts Missing

Jason Elder, the Harrodsburg police officer accused of nearly 150 counts of having sex with a 14 year old, has still not been served with a summons. That's because Kentucky State Police cannot find him. KSP has been working with Elder's attorneys to serve the summons, but to no avail. State Police say Elder moved, changed his address, but they don't know where he is. Elder was indicted on the charges on May 11 and was to be in court for arraignment, based on the summons, on June 21. State police also say they don't know which attorney is representing Elder. No bond was set at indictment, and it said Elder would have a private attorney for his arraignment.

Second Grader Slightly Hurt in Bus Crash

She's fine today, but second grader Amber Pridemore was hurt when her Casey County School bus was scraped by another vehicle. School officials said the Jones Park Elementary student was taken to the hospital with neck pain, and they said the injuries were minor. Casey County Sheriff's Deputies said the bus was on Short Town Road around 7:30 a.m. when the bus was hit on the driver's side by a Ford Escape. All 25 students were checked out, and except for Amber, they were okay.

Perryville Christian Church Plans Benefit Concert For Tornado and Flood Victims

The recent tornadoes and floods in the Midwest dealt a devastating blow to many. The Perryville Christian Church saw the need and is holding a benefit concert on May 27th at the Perryville Battlefield. Pastor Johnna G. Mansuetto says the destruction was so bad that missions cannot currently go to those areas, so raising money and sending hygiene kits was the next best thing.






Admission is one item to be placed in the hygiene kits. A list of those items and more information on the concert is available at perryvillecc.com.

Williams Optomistic About His chances

Now that Kentucky Senate President David Williams is the Republican nominee for governor, he says he'll pursue an aggressive campaign against incumbent Democrat Steve Beshear. Williams is down in the polls by double digits and is behind in fundraising. But the Burkesville native is optimistic about his chances against the current governor. Williams says the campaign against Beshear will be a tough fight: for dollars and for voters.

Legg to Ask for Recanvass

We told you late yesterday that Bill Johnson won the GOP primary in the Secretary of State race, edging out Hilda Legg. Now Legg says she'll ask for a recanvass since the two were only about a thousand votes apart when 100 percent of the precincts were in. Legg says she wants to make sure all the votes were accurately reported. The votes will be certified on Friday and Legg said she'll review those, then go for the recanvass.

Danville Hires Mando

Danville City Commission has hired an attorney to represent them in the case against former city manager Paul Stansberry. Stansberry was fired last week and the city has hired Jeffrey Mando, who's firm deals specifically with termination hearings. The city expects a hearing to be requested this week, that will happen next month, and Mando will represent their side in the matter. City commissioners voted 3 to 1 to hire Mando, with one commission member absent.

Sirens to Sound at BAD

This will be only a test: The sirens at the Bluegrass Army Depot in Madison County will be set off tomorrow morning, but officials say its all in an effort to make sure things are working properly. The event is a quarterly exercise to prepare first responders in the event of a real emergency. The Madison County Emergency Management Agency and Blue Grass Chemical Activity will perform the drill.

Dunn Goes from Centre to Milsaps

Centre College chemistry professor and associate dean Dr. S. Keith Dunn will become a senior VP at Milsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Specifically, Dunn will become the senior vice president for Academic Affairs and Dean at Milsaps in early July. Dunn has been at Centre since 1990, starting as a visiting instructor, then becoming full time in 1993. Dunn, his wife Beth and their two sons, 12 year old Alex and nine year old Drew will all head to Jackson this summer.

Juvenile Hits Home With Truck

People in a Danville home on West Walnut Street had a rude awakening at around 12:30 AM yesterday morning when a juvenile male drove his black Dodge truck into it, damaging a gas meter and satellite dish. Danville Assistant Police Chief Tony Gray says the driver and his passenger then tried to hide from the police.






Both the driver and the passenger were found and released to the custody of their guardians.

Four Boys in the Wrong Place, at the Wrong Time Now in trouble

Nobody was hurt but some Boyle County teens were in trouble after they did some damage trying to make a getaway Monday night. Police said the four boys were at a house on Walnut street, visiting some girls and police said were probably not supposed to be there, so they fled. They got into a truck and tried to speed off, but damaged a gas meter, tore out a satellite dish. They then jumped out and fled on foot. The driver faces the most serious charge: leaving the scene of an accident.

Garrard Co Cow Falls Off Cliff

So a cow fell off a cliff...no, really. Its not a joke, but it did happen in Garrard County a few days ago, but wasn't found and rescued until yesterday. Rescuers said the cow was delivering a calf as the cow stood on the edge of the cliff. The animal's owner said they hadn't seen the cow for a few days, then noticed on Tuesday that she'd fallen from the 150 foot cliff as she was giving birth. It took rescuers from three counties about four hours to help the cow to safety. Rescuers said the calf was born as the cow was falling, and the calf did not survive.

Elder Suspended Without Pay

Harrodsburg city council memebers met in special session yesterday take away Jason Elder's police powers and pay while he's being investigated.. Elder has been indicted on 148 charges of sex crimes, like sodomy, rape and sex abuse for three years while he was a school resource officer.

Windows Shot Out In Danville Over The Weekend

Danville police are asking for the public's help in identifying those responsible for shooting out several windows over the weekend including windows at the workshop of renowned glass artist Stephen Rolfe Powell. Assistant Danville Police Chief Tony Gray is hoping someone saw something…






A red pickup truck drove by one residence at the time of one of the shootings. If you saw anything or have found further damage, you are asked to call 859-238-1220.

Three Reports of Vandalism by Pellet Gun

Danville Police are investigating several reports of damage to windows in downtown buildings that happened over the weekend. Police said the damage was done by someone with a pellet gun. Three calls of vandalism came into the police department on Saturday between 5:50 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Police said the last call was probably of the first damage where people reported glass broken likely by a pellet gun. Police said that while the vandalism looks to be connected, they cannot find a reason for it. If you know anything, call Danville Police.

Lunch with the Arts: Square Dancing

This month's Lunch with the Arts features the Constitution Squares Square Dance Club. Those who attend will learn the history, music and dance of square dancing. Those who do it say while its not difficult, it does take some doing to get the fancy footwork down. You also have to know what the caller's talking about when he or she calls out a dance move. 2011 Lawn Chair Film Festival Friday

Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership presents the 2011 Lawn Chair Film Festival this coming weekend. It will cap off "Day in Danville" events that day. The call for entries went out some time ago, and now, those involved in organizing the film festival say there are all sorts of films planned to be shown on Friday. There are comedies and a horror movie, a film by a local nine year old and lots more to be shown. If you're going, the Lawn Chair Film Festival is Friday from 9:30-11:30 p.m. at Constitution Square State Historic Site and its free.

DGA to Focus on LY Gov Race

The Kentucky governor's race could be in the national spotlight come November. The Democratic Governor's Association says it'll be very involved in the race, but the Louisville Courier Journal reported that the group wouldn't disclose how much time it will spend in the commonwealth. Incumbent Governor Steve Beshear and running mate, Jerry Abramson will face who ever wins the Republican primary tomorrow. The DGA says Kentucky is of prime focus since there are so few governor's races this time around.

Crab Orchard Still Looking into Missing Money

How much money is really missing from Crab Orchard? City officials and auditors will try to figure that out this week. Who took the money? That's still an unknown. Mayor Billy Shelton said last week that Kentucky State Police estimate as much as four thousand dollars is missing from the city, but won't have an exact dollar amount until auditor Craig Butler finishes his audit. Mayor Shelton said that he dismissed former City Clerk Cheri Kuhn because he didn't trust her. A city maintenance worker was also dismissed for some irregularities on the books and Shelton says a third person could also be involved in the missing funds.

Danville to Send Invite to Will and Kate

Did you know Danville has a sister city in Ireland? It does! Its Carrickfergus, and Prince William and Princess Catherine, who were dubbed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also given the titles of Baron and Baroness of Carrickfergus. Connection? Maybe. So because of that, there's an invite going out to the Baron and Baroness from Danville, to come to Danville. The Danville Sister Cities Commission meets next week and they'll talk about the details of the invitation then. Its an open meeting, so go, if you want to.

Miracle and Lincoln Co Teachers At Odds Over Annexation

Stanford Mayor Bill Miracle met with educators who said they didn't want the Lincoln County Schools property to be annexed. His exact quote to the: “For everyone who doesn’t want to pay that tax, there is someone who would gladly take that job.” The teachers said they were put at odds against the mayor who said he'd annex the schools. Miracle would later apologize for the comment. The mayor and city council are considering that annexation. Educators say they're concerned about what that will do to their personal economy. The teachers in the high school, middle school and Sixth Grade Center would have to pay the .65 percent occupancy tax, 65 dollars for every ten thousand dollars of income. The mayor said one plus for the school district would be a reduced sewer bill -- by 35 percent and a reduced water bill by ten percent. And there'd be better fire and police protection.

KY Primary is Tuesday

The Primary Election is tomorrow and the polls are open from 6 a.m to 6 p.m. and no alcohol is sold while polls are open, even in wet counties. The primary is party related, so voters can only vote in thee party in which they're registered. There are races for Governor, Auditor, Commissioner of Agriculture, Secretary of State, and State Treasurer. Those are on the state level. There could be local primaries where you are too. Chandler Saw bin Lade Pics

Democratic Congressman Ben Chandler says he's seen the bin Laden pictures and you should too. He said the gunshot that killed bin Laden looks like an ax across his head. Chandler serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and was among the first members of Congress to see the pictures at CIA headquarters. He said, as many who've seen them have said "its pretty gruesome." Chandler said its clear in the pictures that they are of bin Laden. He said quote -- They got Osama bin Laden."

Danville Community Arts Center is Seeking New Artists-in-Residence

The Danville Community Arts Center's artist-in-residence, David Farmer, has left his Arts Center studio to pursue his artistic endeavors from home. According to Marketing Director Jenny Jacoby the arts center is now seeking new artists-in-residence to fill the void left by Farmer.

Lincoln Co Coroner and Deputies Can Use Emergency Lights

If you're in traffic in Lincoln County because there's a fatal crash, you could see more lights than just those of police, fire, ambulances and first responders. You could see a second responder. Lincoln County fiscal court gave its approval this week for the coroner and his deputies to use their emergency lights to get to the scene of a fatal crash. Coroner Ferris Marcum told the court that its sometimes difficult to maneuver through traffic to get to a crash, and that being able to use the lights -- only for that purpose -- will help.

Details: Stansbury Firing

We told you on Tuesday that Danville City Manager Paul Stansbury was fired, and we now know how it went down. The Danville City Commission had been holding executive sessions after their regular meetings for some time. When they did the same thing on Monday night, over the objections of Commission members James Atkins and Kevin Caudill, the result was that they had fired Stansbury. Caudill and Atkins said they disagreed with not only the firing, but even the executive session, as they believed that Stansbury had been doing a good job for the city. Caudill said he believed there were politics at play. Stansbury had no comment on the action, since he said the move was unexpected. The resolution to fire Stansbury also says he'll get paid through June 10. Mayor Bernie Hunstad said the city will look for an interim city manager until a permanent one can be hired later.

Investigating Kathy Miracle's Death

Investigators say it will be weeks before they know how 52 year old Kathy Miracle died. Her body was found in her Maxwell Street home in Stanford over the weekend, there was a .38 caliber gun nearby and a bullet stuck in the sofa where she was lying. Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum said they're still waiting for test results that may tell how if Miracle killed herself, or if someone else killed her. She was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the chest on Saturday. Police consider Miracle's husband Ricky a suspect in her death for now, but has not been charged.

Wanted Mercer Co Man Busted in Boyle Co

So a man wanted by the law was hurt in a car crash in March. On Tuesday night, Boyle County Sheriff's Marty Elliott said 48 year old Steven Wilson of Mercer County was arrested at his friend's house near Parksville. The sheriff's department got a tip, and found Wilson in a closet at the house, with prescription meds that Elliott said Wilson got from Georgia. The sheriff said the empty bottle once contained about 90 Lortabs worth about 13 hundred dollars, and that was enough to charge Wilson with trafficking. Wilson's in the Boyle County Detention Center on several charges.

Gag Gift Forces Evacuation Of Boulder Home

A Boulder cul-de-sac is evacuated after an old gag gift is mistaken for a bomb. Police say three candlesticks tied together with letters saying "TNT" were found yesterday by a family cleaning their Vassar Circle home. Several homes were evacuated while the bomb squad investigated. It's believed the gift was originally given to one family member years ago.

In the event of a tornado, you should never just rely on outdoor sirens for notification… that is according to Don Gilliam, Director of the Lincoln County Emergency Management agency. Gilliam recommends purchasing a weather radio…






Gilliam also wants to remind everyone that the outdoor sirens are used for other things besides tornado warnings. You should also change the batteries in it, just like you would a smoke alarm.

Few Expected for May 17 Primary

The primary is now less than a week away, so are you voting? The Kentucky Secretary of State's Office says turnout for the May 17 primary election will be one of the lowest turnouts in 20 years. Its expected that fewer than ten percent of voters will cast ballots in the primary, with 90 percent leaving choices for the fall election up to just a few people. So how does the secretary of state's office know how many will turnout? It says there have been few requests for absentee ballots, and that its a key indicator of turnout at the polls. Kentucky has nearly three million registered voters.

Garrard County Redraws Magisterial Lines

If you thought the census only conjured up new Congressional and legislative district lines, think again. There's a committee in Garrard County that will work on redrawing magisterial districts that will be based on the census. The county's budget follows the current lines, and so far, it looks good for county taxpayers. They won't pay anymore in taxes than they have since the last census, and that's eight cents per 100 dollars of assessed property value. Judge-Executive John Wilson said that if may be a bit tighter than in the past, but he said, its a budget that works. Garrard County's total budget for fiscal 2011 is 6.6 million dollars, down about a million and a half from fiscal 2010. And back to that map...its up to the committee to decide if the county needs three, or seven, or the five magistrates they've had for years.

Harrodsburg Water Treatment Plant on the Grow

Lots of local dignitaries were on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Harrodsburg water treatment plant on Monday. Its a 12 million dollar project that expand the plant's capacity to six million gallons a day. Harrodsburg Mayor Eddie Long said expansions like the one at Wausau would not have been possible were it not for the soon-to-be expansion of the water treatment plant. Long said the expansion will create a 50 percent increase in water production for the city. The water treatment expansion is a bit "all in the family, as Warren Rogers of W. Rogers Company said his father, who started the contracting company, expanded the water treatment the last time it grew. Now, all agree, its growing more for the good.

"Ghost out" at Lincoln Co HD Today

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety is coordinating a “Ghost Out” at Lincoln County High School today. The program uses the Grim Reaper to select students throughout the morning; each representing a victim of an alcohol or drug related crash. Once removed from their peers, victims write their own obituary. A mock funeral for is held during an afternoon assembly, with classmates watching as each one is laid to rest. The program runs all day, during school hours. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA says nearly every 30 minutes an American dies because of an impaired driver. Every two minutes, someone is injured. NHTSA also says motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teenage fatalities, with over one-third of the traffic deaths related to alcohol.

Cabrera to Change Plea

Boyle County court document indicate that 38 year old Jesus Cabrera will change his plea in the case of allegedly bringing contraband into the Northpoint Training Center. He already pleaded not guilty to the charge brought by a Boyle County grand jury last September. Now, court records indicate Cabrera will change his plea next month before a Boyle Circuit Judge. We don't know yet if Cabrera will plead to an amended charge. he was arrested last July, found will a dozen pills on Northpoint property.

Stansbury Fired

The Danville City Commission fired City Manager Paul Stansbury yesterday. After numerous executive sessions, the commission voted 3 to 2 to pass a resolution for Stansbury's dismissal.

Mock Disaster Excercise Will Take Place Thursday Morning at Cedar Creek Lake

The Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency would like everyone to be aware that a mock disaster exercise will take place on Thursday morning at Ramp number one on Cedar Creek Lake. Director Don Gilliam says the exercise is not open to the public.






The exercise will include area emergency teams including Fort Logan Hospital and Garrard and Boyle County Emergency Management. According to Gilliam, the information gathered will make the teams better prepared to serve and protect the citizens of the counties and Commonwealth.

Police Investigate Shooting Death in Stanford

Police in Lincoln County are investigating after a woman was shot to death on Maxwell Street in Stanford. She's been identified as 52 year old Kathy Miracle and she was shot some time Saturday afternoon. Police are talking with a "person of interest" in the case. Neighbors say they were surprised to hear about the death since they say its a quiet area.

Replica Vietnam Wall in Somerset

The replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall will be in Somerset starting today. The traveling wall has hundreds of names of those killed in combat on it and brings up emotions for many who visit it. Officials say they want to try to get pictures of all Kentuckians whose names are on the wall. There's a museum that travels with the wall and gives visitors more information than just a name on the wall. The wall will be in Somerset through Saturday and will be available and open to the public much of the time its there. Somerset is the only stop in the Commonwealth this year.

Perryville Trying to Increase Contribution to 911 Center

Perryville, Danville, Junction City and Boyle County all contribute to the Boyle County 911 Center. The levels of contribution for each was set more than two decades ago, so now, Perryville wants to increase its 700 dollar annual contribution to 28 hundred dollars a year, but the city is concern about where it will get the money. The total contribution from all municipalities is about 17 thousand dollars a year, and while it will be difficult to come up with, Perryville officials say they'll work on their part of the contribution.

Swirl, Sip and Shop Coming Up

Swirl, Sip and Shop is coming up in less than two weeks. The Heart of Danville sponsors the wine tasting event and the tickets are on sale now. You can get them at the Heart of Danville office. They're 15 dollars each and allow you to sample more than 25 wines and some food items that will be available at downtown businesses. The second annual Danville Lawn Chair Film Festival is that night at 9:30 p.m. at Constitution Square State Historic Site.

Danville Man, Three Others Busted on Meth Charges

Richmond police got tipped off to a meth lab last Friday, so they raided the place. That's when they arrested a Danville man. Twenty-nine year old Mitchell Whitaker faces charges of making meth and endangering a child.
Three others from Richmond all face the same charges. The raid went down at 407 Smith Village. Police smelled meth, got permission to go into the house and found the meth lab. They also called social services and had a 15 month old child removed from the home, to the care of a grandparent. The four suspects were taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

IN Man Pleads Guilty in Boyle Co

An Indiana has pleaded guilty to a charge in a Kentucky Court. The charge says that 44 year old Larry Foster of Evansville, Indiana took nearly 2650 dollars for filtration systems and never installed it. The charge and the plea came in a Boyle County court last week. The victim is Tom Hunstad of Perryville and the work was supposed to be done in January. Foster faces similar charges in other jurisdictions. He pleaded guilty on Wednesday to theft by deception and must pay Hunstad full restitution. Foster is not allowed to contact his victims and he cannot do business in Boyle County.

Know The Symptoms of Stroke

Stroke is the nation's fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability. May is Stroke Awareness Month and doctors stress the importance of knowing the symptoms and taking fast action. According to Dr. Nirav Vora (NEAR-uv VOR-ah), a neurologist with SSM Neurosciences Institute at DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, the use of a drug called TPA can stop a stroke in its tracks if used quickly.






Symptoms include drooping of the face, slurred speech, weakness in the arms, dizziness, double vision, and difficulty talking. Fortunately, the risk of stroke can be reduced by not smoking, controlling high blood pressure, and having normal weight and exercising.

Man Allegedly Kidnapped, Tortured Woman

Richmond Police arrested a man who allegedly kidnapped then tortured a woman. They said that on Monday, 26 year old Jessie Baugh came to where the woman works and threatened her and her daughter if she didn't accompany him. Baugh then allegedly took her to a garage in Richmond. He supposedly tied her up, and strangled her until she was unconscious. Baugh is accused of hitting the woman with several different items, including copper wire, but she made a run for it when he wasn't looking. A passerby took the victim to the hospital where she was treated and released. Police said the suspect and the victim know each other. Baugh is in jail, charged with kidnapping and assault.

Lancaster Man Wants UK to Follow ADA

A hearing impaired UK football fan says he wants captioning on the video boards and monitors at Commonwealth Stadium. Charles Mitchell is from Lancaster. He filed a complaint this week in US District Court in Lexington. He charges that he cannot hear what's being said on the PA system in the stadium and that if the stadium puts captioning on the monitors, he and other 'Cats fans who are hearing impaired will know what's being said. Mitchell claims that by not doing that UK is violating the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 and reminds that the University of Kentucky gets federal funding. UK had no comment on the lawsuit.

Car Crashes into Richmond Gas Station

Police said a car crashed into a Richmond gas station yesterday morning. Witnesses told police that after the car crashed into the business, it backed up and sped off. Police later arrested the driver, 19-year-old Alexander Krinsky of Louisville. He faces charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal mischief, failure to maintain insurance and driving with no headlights. Police said there were several people inside University Shell at Eastern Bypass ant Lancaster Road when Krinsky crashed the car. Nobody was hurt.

Pres. Obama at Fort Campbell Today; Gov. Beshear at Oaks

President Barack Obama will be at Fort Campbell today, to thank and congratulate Navy SEALS who helped take out Osama bin Laden on Sunday, but Governor Steve Beshear will not be there to greet the Commander in Chief. The governor said the President's visit wasn't confirmed until late Wednesday night, and he couldn't change previously scheduled plans. Today is Kentucky Oaks Day, so Governor Beshear will be in Louisville. This will be Obama's first visit to Kentucky since being elected President.

President Obama made it clear yesterday that pictures of Osama bin Laden's dead body will not be released to the public. That is not stopping scammers from claiming they have them. Links on Facebook and in emails have been popping up in people's accounts and law enforcement officials like Danville Police Department Assistant Chief Tony Gray are warning to be aware.






The FBI has warned the current scam could lead to a virus that will steal your personal information.

Former Stanford Business Owner Indicted

The woman who used to own Fabric Creations in Stanford was jailed on a 50 thousand dollar bond, indicted by a grand jury for not paying sales taxes. The business moved last year and 56 year old Lorna Oaks of Mason Gap Road is facing charges of theft for not making required disposition more than ten thousand dollars. The indictment charges that Oaks did not pay sales and use taxes from 2006 to 2009.

Couple Busted for "Inside Job" Robbery in Somerset

Who really pulled off a supposed armed robbery on Easter Sunday in Somerset. Police said it was an inside job. It all started when 19 year old Sarah Lanter, who worked at the Midtown ExpressMart Marathon -- the one by the Walmart -- called 911 that day to report that an unknown man took an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot. Police said Lanter and her 32 year old husband Roger Lanter feigned the robbery, knowing there were cameras on and working inside the business. They said he came in, supposedly took the money, fled and she called for help. Police said they were tipped off because they knew things on the video weren't right, so they arrested the, charged them and and on Monday, took them to the Pulaski County Jail.

Danville Employees May or May Not See a Raise

The staff of the city of Danville hasn't seen a raise in pay for three years now, and as the numbers are still being crunched for the 2011 budget, they may not see one for a fourth year. The city commission is still looking for ways to cut the budget so that it fits within the boundaries of 11.6 million dollars. City manager Paul Stansbury said that if there is a raise in pay, it would be one and a half percent across the board and would amount to about 106 thousand dollars.
One place that Mayor Bernie Hunstad and the council talked about cutting was clothing, save for police and fire. Hunstad said he learned that the city is paying for about 33 thousand dollars a year in uniforms for people who do not work for the fire or police departments. The mayor said they'll keep crunching the numbers.

Williams Was Here, Sans Farmer

“Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way”. That's what people in Lancaster found out it says on David Williams bus. He's the Republican running for governor and he was in Lancaster Tuesday for a campaign stop. His running mate Richie Farmer was not with him there, or when Williams stopped in Lincoln or Mercer Counties. Williams will face former Jefferson County Clerk Bobby Holtsclaw and Louisville businessman Phil Moffitt in the May 17 primary. This is the second time Williams has been in the area without his running mate.

Farmer Owes Tax on State Vehicle Use

Public records show that Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer did not pay taxes for personal use of a state vehicle that he used during the past six years. The records also indicate that state auditors warned him several times that the use taxes needed to be paid. Farmer is also Republican gubernatorial candidate David Williams' running mate in the May 17 primary. Farmer acknowledged the failure to pay the taxes and will now have the funds taken out of his paychecks until the full amount he owes is paid to the state.it."

KY Helps AL After the Tornadoes

It always happens when there's a need: People come from everywhere to help, to fill the need. That's what's happening in Alabama, and some people from Kentucky are heading that direction. Reverend Gary Phelps of the Oak Hill Baptist Church has already sent several truckloads of necessities to the tornado ravaged area of the Heart of Dixie. Phelps knows people who live near Birmingham and he's been in contact with people down south to find out what they need. That's why Phelps and some help filled several trucks with the basic necessities, all the way down to flashlights and batteries. More trucks heading out today to bring supplies to those who are without.

Richmond Firefighter Killed in Crash on Monday to be Buried on Thursday

Firefighters in Richmond will bury one of their own tomorrow. On Monday, firefighter 29 year old Tim Farthing was killed when his personal vehicle, a pick up truck, which he was driving, went off Red House Road and slammed into a tree. He was not far from his house. Farthing was not on duty when he was killed. Now firefighters from all over will gather to lay their comrade to rest on Thursday with full honors. On that day too, Richmond's fire chief is retiring.

Man Hits Woman's Car with Bat

A Somerset man was last reported to be in the Pulaski County Detention Center on Monday after he allegedly stuck a woman's car several times with a baseball bat. Police said that 24 year old Alexis S. Dela Cruz Medina faces two counts of wanton endangerment. Police said that around 11:30 Monday night, a woman swerved on the Cumberland Parkway to miss a deer and she stuck Medina's car. She pulled her car over and stopped, and so did Medina. Police said he then got out of the car and started hitting her car with the bat. They said he then ordered his girlfriend and their child out of his car as he fled the scene. He was stopped in Russell County and arrested.

Mercer Co Library Dedicated

Hundreds gathered on Sunday to dedicate the new Mercer County Public Library, and to see that new sculpture. The 15 foot tall iron screen was unveiled during the dedication. Tony Higdon and Erika Strecker of Lexington are the artists behind the sculpture that's part of the nearly four million dollar library. Farmers in Mercer County donated parts of farm implements that are now part of the sculpture. The library has actually been open since January 17, but was dedicated on Sunday.

New Terrorism Alert System Will Provide More Detailed Information

The National Homeland Security Office has made it clear that the death of Osama Bin Laden is not the end of the threat of terrorist acts toward our country. As a reminder, the familiar color-coded system of alerts is no longer in play. Instead, according to Amy Kudra, a spokesperson for Homeland Security, the new two-alert system will provide more specifics about the alert being issued.






The two levels will be "Elevated Threat" and "Imminent Threat." Currently, there are no alerts issued. To find out more about the new alert system or if any have been issued, go to dhs.gov/alerts.

Chandler Comments on bin Laden's Death

U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler is among Congresspeople making statements about the death of Osama bin Laden. On Monday afternoon, the sixth district Congressman and member of the Intelligence Committee said that he was proud of the country's intelligence community and the US military. Chandler said quote -- "We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. Nearly ten years after 9/11, I hope families affected by the tragedies of that day will receive some measure of closure." Chandler said with bin Laden dead, the country still cannot forget the threats and that we have to be on our guard to keep the US safe.

Two Boyle Co Students Going Down Under

Two Boyle County High School students are going down under this summer. Fifteen year old Shante Glover and 17 year old Amanda Goggin are going to Australia with the People to People program that will let them travel around the east coast of the continent. People to People got started with President Dwight D Eisenhower and allows ordinary people to interact with other ordinary people in foreign countries.

Meth lab bust

A report of a fight turns into a meth lab bust. Last Friday night the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office was dispatched to 3515 Kentucky Highway 1778 on a report of a fight in progress. When Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger, two deputies and a constable arrived, they report they found 3 operating methamphetamine labs. Suspect Ronnie McQueary was arrested and a haz-mat team was called to remove the dangerous chemicals. McQueary is being held in the Lincoln County Jail.

Mercer Co Health Dept Floods

The Mercer County Health Department won't be open today since a pipe bursts and flooded the building over the weekend. The water set off a fire alarm yesterday morning and there were at least six inches of water in the building. Health department officials said they can still take phone calls today and refer patients to local doctors. Officials say they hope to have the Mercer County Health Department open again on Wednesday.

Man Arrested for Having Gun, Being Drunk inside Local Restaurant

A Stanford man was jailed on Thursday after he allegedly pulled a gun at the Applebee's in Danville. Police said the man had been drinking. Fifty year old Steve Coleman faces a charges of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, public intoxication, resisting arrest and possession of a loaded firearm in a location where alcohol is served. Danville Police said somebody called 911 just after 11:30 Thursday night and reported the incident. Patrons told police that Coleman was showing them the weapon, but getting belligerent. KSP was also on the scene and helped to arrest Coleman, who allegedly fought with police. At last report, Coleman was in jail without bond on Friday.

Lincon Co Schools Not Happy With Annexation

Lincoln County School officials say they were surprised last week by Stanford Mayor Bill Miracle's attempt to annex them into the city -- and they say, they're not happy. Superintendent Karen Hatter said in a statement on Saturday that she's concerned about being absorbed into the city might affect the schools, specifically, the occupational tax that employees would have to pay. She said it would unnecessarily burden employees. Those in the area that would be affected would not only pay what they're currently paying, but an added .065 percent payroll tax to Stanford. Second reading of the ordinance is set for May 10.
