Danville Fire Marshall: New Fireworks Law A Good One, But Use Caution
Back in March, House Bill 333 was signed, allowing the sale of the larger Class C fireworks. Ken Pflug, Fire Marshall for the city of Danville believes that law is a good one since it allows them to regulate and monitor fireworks that were already being bought in other states and then brought to the area. Pflug just hopes that everyone that has them will use them with caution.
Economically, the new law has also worked. The sales tax that used to go to the states where they were sold before now stays here. Businesses also have to purchase a permit to sell the larger fireworks. The old law permitted only fireworks that stayed on the ground, with nothing shooting into the air beyond a relatively short fountain.

Parents Use Caution With Class C Fireworks
The new law that has allowed the sale of larger Class C fireworks such as Roman candles and bottle rockets is a great asset, according to Danville city Fire Marshall Ken Plfug. He says it allows them to regulate fireworks that were normally brought in from other states.

Junction City and Perryville A Tale of Two Budgets
Revenues will be up in one Boyle County town and down in another. That's the outcome of Junction City and Perryville passing budgets this week. Junction City passed a budget for the upcoming fiscal year of nearly 281 thousand dollars, up nearly 190 thousand dollars from the current budget. That means their reserves will also be up, from nearly 12 thousand dollars to just over 83 thousand dollars. In Perryville, the budget for fiscal 2011 is about 296 thousand dollars, down from 316 thousand for fiscal 2010. The city is looking at a loss of revenue for next fiscal year.
Councilman Harold Jones, who was part of a group that worked on the budget, said the primary reason income is expected to dip is the loss of tax revenue from the PNC Bank branch that recently closed.
“Hopefully, we’ll find someone to replace them,” Jones said. “It is not going to tear us apart as a city, but you hope you can find another business like that.”
Perryville’s budget also does not include raises for employees for the first time in recent memory.
Both Junction City and Perryville were asked to make increased payments for the Boyle 911 Dispatch Center when the city of Danville began negotiating the agreement between the two cities and the county earlier this year.
The level each government pays for the dispatch center had been based on an agreement signed in 1988 that required each to pay based on the call volume. Danville has picked up the slack as overall costs have increased. Officials have asked that Junction City, Perryville and Boyle County, which had been paying roughly the same dollar amount for years, to increase their contribution based on the call percentage.
Perryville was paying about $700 a year, but based on its call volume of less than 5 percent of the total for the entire county, it would now owe about $17,000. The city plans to try to increase its allocation gradually and budgeted $2,780 for the coming year.
Junction City Council decided not to increase the $6,500 payment in next year’s budget. Douglas said a group of council members would be meeting soon with Danville officials about the possibility of restructuring their payment the following year.

Fires Break Out at Same Location 13 Hours Apart
It was a vacant house in Garrard County where firefighters fought not one, but two fires on Tuesday. We told you yesterday about the first one: it happened early Tuesday morning at 3316 Fall Lick Road. But then, just over 12 hours later, there was a second fire at the same location. The house is a rental property and nobody was living there, but investigators said it was heavily damaged. Fire investigators said the fires appeared to be unrelated, in two separate places in the house. They said the first fire was burning around the air conditioner when they got to the scene around 1 a.m. When firefighters got the second call on the property around 2 p.m., that fire was bigger and coming out of the roof. Firefighters spend about three hours putting that fire out. Nobody was hurt, but some of the firefighters had to be cooled before they could continue working.
