House Republicans, Others Blast Environmental Protection Agency
FRANKFORT, Ky. – House Republicans joined their colleagues on the Special Subcommittee on Energy committee today in blasting the EPA for failing to notify them about their two-day visit to Eastern Kentucky, and for what they call a violation of the U.S. Constitution for their on-going crackdown on Kentucky’s coal industry. The comments were made during the committee’s August meeting in Frankfort.
“One of the headlines today is about dozens of miners losing their jobs in Bell and Harlan counties because their company can’t get new permits from the Federal government,” said Rep. Tim Couch, R-Hyden (90th District). “Since the EPA is in the region, perhaps they can go to the unemployment offices in those counties and explain to these miners why they’re losing their jobs.”
Many of the committee members who represent Eastern Kentucky complained they were never notified that the EPA were visiting areas in Clay, Perry, Knott, Letcher and Harlan counties to get feedback for regulations dealing with the coal industry. They and other members who represent other parts of Kentucky blasted the EPA and the current administration in Washington as being anti-coal and anti-Kentucky.
“My father is from Eastern Kentucky, and he said if there is one thing you should do as a legislator is not do anything that will hurt our coal industry,” said Rep. Lonnie Napier, R-Lancaster (36th District). “I just want my fellow legislators from Eastern Kentucky and those in the coal industry to know that many of us have and will continue to support any efforts to protect our coal industry.”

Harrodsburg's city commission voted to put the signs in, in the middle of streets at busy intersections to get drivers' attention. Others say the signs are a good idea, to slow the speeders and keep everyone safe.

At that meeting, Morgan stated that he believed former Mayor John Bowling overstepped his bounds by asking P and Z Director Paula Bary to issue a permit for a business she had previously denied. Morgan claims that 10 days later he was contacted by Danville Code Enforcement Officer Tom Broach about an abandoned property Morgan owns. Lincoln School Board to Hear Results of Air Quality Tests From Hustonville Elementary Following Weekend Cleaning
5pm Board Meeting on Aug. 9 to Finalize Start of School Date
STANFORD, Ky (August 8, 2011) – Lincoln County will hold a board meeting on
Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 5 p.m. to receive and discuss findings from air quality samples
taken at Hustonville Elementary School, following professional air “scrubbing” that
took place over the weekend. Once the board reviews the results, it will finalize
the date for the first day of school for Hustonville students, currently set as the
district-wide start date of Aug. 11. Regardless of any decision on the start date for
Hustonville Elementary, all other schools in the district will open as scheduled.
“We are going above and beyond to ensure a safe and comfortable environment
for our Hustonville students,” said Superintendent Karen Hatter. “Two expert
environmental consultants and several members of our energy services team have
toured the building and we are all working together toward a secure and happy
first day of school.”
During July environmental mold was discovered that occurred as a result of
uncharacteristically high levels of humidity in a wing of the school building that had
been temporarily closed off. One of two air samples taken July 29 following the
initial clean-up showed an elevated level of mold in the air, Hatter said.
“The elevated level was consistent with what we would expect immediately after
the initial clean-up and before air scrubbers had been used,” said air quality
consultant Shauna Weis, of Environmental Safety Technology. “Follow up tests
conducted Monday and Tuesday morning should provide laboratory results that
the clean-up plan was successful.”
The plan included placing air scrubbers with HEPA filters and wiping down
classrooms, the library and other rooms, and hallways over the weekend. New air
quality tests will be conducted Monday and Tuesday, and the School Board will
receive the results Tuesday afternoon, Hatter said.

The event is keeping to tradition, being held on the grounds of St Jerome Catholic Church in Fancy Farm, Kentucky, and keeping to the tradition of mud slinging, but being nice: and no cussin'!

The Lancaster city council has decided to build its own 12 million dollar water treatment plant. That decision was made this week in a unanimous vote, minus one absent council member. The city could have bought water from Danville, or selling the system to Kentucky American Water. Council members say that while the decision does not bind them to anything, it does show residents that they do want to make a move on the long awaited water issue in Lancaster.

Lancaster Could Lose Without a Police Chief
Lancaster is just over a month away from losing state funding if Mayor Brenda Powers doesn't name a new police chief. The city got a letter dated July 15 from the Department of Criminal Justice Training that said the city has to have a police chief in place in 60 days -- that would be September 15 -- or it will lose its participation in the Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation Program Fund. It's 31 hundred dollars a year in pay stipend for officers if the city follows all the rules of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. So if there's no chief by mid-September the city will be disqualified from the program.

Parole and Porbation Moves to Lancaster City Hall
Makes more sense: move a state office into the back part of Lancaster City Hall than have it at a shopping center. So that's what's happening with the vacant part of city hall. Mayor Brenda Powers told council at its meeting this week that the parole and probation office that right now is at the Pleasant Retreat will be in city hall. The state will pay Lancaster just over 38 thousand dollars a year to lease the three thousand feet of space. It will take about 32 thousand dollars and about three months to renovate the space so the state can use it, so the city will use part of the first year's lease to pay for it.

The Pig Roast will be held Saturday evening at Chimney Rock Marina. Besides a meal of pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, chips and soft drinks, there will also be live music, a corn hole tournament, a raffle for a five thousand dollar cruise and a silent auction.

Engineers later said the church sanctuary was safe. They said they don't know what caused it to collapse but might have been because of moisture in the wall.
